I'm currently packing my life away to move back to University. I'm anxious, sad, and thrilled all at once. And...I'm not sure what came over me yesterday but I bought these incredible boots from LuLu's:

[ Dear Hair, I Refuse To Style You ]

I just wanted to do a quick, quick post on my favorite hair products
(That I have tried, and I have tried A LOT).

First, some info about my hair type!
-Medium Length
-Thick
-Wavy
-Frizzy
-Not Coarse
-Dark

I am forunate enough to have very manageable hair (if it's taken care of right!)

I have tried several shampoos and conditioners (Tresemme, Dove, Garnier Fructis, Salon Brands etc. etc.) and my favorite has to be the Aveeno Shampoos and Conditioners.

I'm really loyal to the Aveeno brand because of how natural their products are. I currently use:

What makes them different? This is the only set of hair products that has left my hair incredibly soft (even after it air dries) and smelling lovely. My spiff with a LOT of products is that they feel nice in the shower but the moisture doesn't stay after drying. I'll go into more details in later post.

My after shower regime: I DO NOT blow dry my hair, except in rushing emergencies of course. I believe very heavily in letting your hair style itself. Everyone's hair has a natural style. Mine is wavy. It has some problems, but if those problems are taken care it usually looks amazing.

1) On a typical day, after leaving the shower, I towel dry my hair and brush it to detangle. If the brush isn't going through smoothly, you need to change your shampoo/conditioner. They are there to prep your hair.

2) I spray Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-in Treatment and brush through to distribute evenly.

3) To let the natural waves create themselves, I braid it to the side and tie it.

4) I keep baby hairs controlled by geling them to the side or up.

After that, I basically just let my hair air dry. In a couple of hours, when I untie my hair, the waves are there already and I can just set them with some hair spray or leave them alone.

Try to figure out how to rock your natural hair; it'll probably be much easier than styling and stressing every day!

During my first semester in college, I had worked on a documentary with the Rutgers University Writing Center. They basically gave me a little camera and told me to record my life as an Expository Writing student.

It's finally finished! Some screen shots below...

I'm shocked at how different I look...

My hair was cooperative back then.

I think I came off as kind of snobby and bitchy which was completely unintentional..

That's a little upsetting.

But overall it looked nice.

[ Shiver Me Boots! ]

I think I should rework my blog a little bit to emphasize fantasy fashion. I've wanted to get a pair of pirate boots for quite some time. These are the three I've been debating over.

The first ones are from Leg Avenue and they run for about $60-$70 depending on where you're buying them from. I like the gold heel and the flap at the top. I'm not sure about the trim.

The second ones are from Pleaser and they run for about $60-$70 as well, depending on where you're buying them from. I love love love the gold cap on the toe. I think it's adorable. I really like these ones.

The third ones are from Funtasma (Pleaser?) I think they come from the same guys as the last pair. Anyway they ALSO run for about $60-$70! I like the criss crossing laces and, of course, I would get them in black!

At what point did you realize that some colors just looked awful on you? Or just awful in general?

It's really funny how consistent my wardrobe is. There's only a handful of outlandish pieces.

Here are the colors I stick to:

[ Other World Scents ]

Remember the V-neck Jumper I was raving about a little while back? IT CAME IN!

I was really excited to open the package for two reasons:

1. This thing is fugging adorable. I mean, just look at it.
2. I love smelling different cities; this package came from Hong Kong and it smelled like plastic stuffs.

My boyfriend ordered a accessory for his netbook a little while back and the package came from China. He said it smelled like "grass but thicker and a little more sour; kind of like a weird tea with some ginger"

He sealed it back up so I could smell it when I got the chance.

[ TopShop Dreams ]

I had never heard of TopShop until I started browsing blogs. Some of their pieces are so whimsical.

I love clothes because they take me out of character. While browsing, I kept imagining myself as a mob boss, a wealthy princess and a french artist.

My favorite piece is the Tail Badeau Dress. If there was one piece of clothing in the world that identified my perfectly, this would be it. I can just imagine myself running around a castle in it.

[ Dear Specific Bloggers ]

I recently reduced the number of blogs I read to a small amount because I just couldn't keep track of all of them...I hate it when blogs aren't very inspiring but they request followers anyway. Put some effort into your blog!

But those aren't the people I'm here to complain about...and I'm not sure I have a name for the people I'm about to complain about. I guess you could call them compliment commenters. They basically drop a comment like..."Cute!" or "Love that outfit!" and their blog URL and that's it. They really have nothing substantive to say but they like the idea that they're getting their name out there.

There is one in particular that I see on pretty much every blog I follow. She really irritates me. I'm debating whether or not I should tell you who I'm thinking of. I'm pretty sure you could guess.

Anyway, compliment commenters are not welcome here. I don't really have many followers and I don't mind but if you're not going to say something you mean, then don't say anything at all :O

Also, I'd like to inform you that I won't be posting any outfit photos until I have access to a camera (which won't be for another month) Please go follow some other inspiring blogs :] I have several listed in my sidebar.

Today was really fun. I met up with my best friend that I haven't seen for two YEARS! It's been a long time coming. My boyfriend came too and we all went to Fuji--yum!

I was wearing an elaborate outfit (Will post pictures when I get a hold of them--they were taken on my friends camera) but here's what I lounged at home in.

AND! I'm basking in boy briefs which I decided to leave out for obvious reasons.

Here's some closer shots of the scarf/shirt:

Depending on how long the scarf you want to work with is, you just wrap it around your torso a few times and either tuck or pin the strays. It's really light and comfortable.

Stay cool. AUTUMN IS ALMOST HERE. HANG IN THERE WITH ME!

I wish I could hug my readers! This isn't fair. I loff you guys.

Now then! Here's what's bothering me: As you know, I've taken aggressive liking to Japanese fashion.

I've spent hours in these last few weeks browsing several eBay stores for my favorites. And, I must tell you! I've found so much it's getting hard to rationally choose...

I love faux fur. This blouse just looks so luxurious and cozy. I would wear it around the house.

The print skirt would look so perfect with a slim black long sleeve top and boots. Just imagine that for a second.... RIGHT?

The skirt looks so airy and light. I would love to wear it in the fall with a pair of boots.

I don't care if I get judged for wearing a bear coat! I love it. It's fugging adorable and I'm getting it!

The one thing that's terrible about all of this is that the shipping for the clothes is really high because they come from Hong Kong. It makes me cry but I'll save up for these...

So my mom finally returned after her long "vacation" in Texas. She just came back last night. And although it was incredibly stressful to wait around, she came bearing some gifts; these Givenchy inspired studded heels:

I love how deceptively flat they appear, they're actually not flats. There's a half inch heel underneath. I love that. It's like my little secret. And it adds that *click!* sound when you walk.

Worn with the Polka Dot Tights I got from Hong Kong! Too many dots? I think not.

[ A Late Introduction ]

I just realized...I never actually set aside a specific post to introduce myself. Where have my manners gone? I do that to random strangers too...talk without introduction. Who needs an identity anyways!? Tsk tsk. Okay then.

My name is Yasmeen Fahmy and I'm 19 years old. I currently study Economics and Geography at Rutgers University and I work at the television station there. I had a variety of roles including a hosting position for the morning show...which I quit last semester (for several, good reasons). All of society's labels aside, I like to think of myself as a life enthusiast. I'm not sure if there's a better word for it. I like to explore. I don't like being in the same place for too long. If I am, I'm probably in deep, deep thought about the universe and morals etc.

In that sense I'm partially a philosopher too. Probably not as talented as Plato or Socrates but still. I love watching films, old, new, anything intriguing and thought-provoking. I especially like Documentaries and Thrillers. I also write, not as frequently as a used to. I used to write a lot of fiction. Now I write just to exercise my style and occasionally to start screenplays and never finish them. If I could choose my dream job right now it would be a Director/Actress, Film Animator (Pixar), or a Fashion Designer. Seems out of line for me to then study Economics and Geography, yes? Well that's just the way the pieces fell for me and I'm okay with it.

My best friend (and lover) is Mo. He's wonderful and I'm not sure how much he likes to be written about so I'll leave it at that. I'll probably talk about him more later anyway. And finally, let me also throw in my general likes and dislikes.

[ Inception: Film Review ]

Final Score:

If you're not too busy being terrified by Marion Cotillard's penetrating glare, then definitely try to watch this movie more than once. After catching the midnight show in IMAX (so very worth the $14.50), I went to see it again yesterday with my boyfriend. If you know me personally, you know I love a film that drags you in, beats you with its logic and leaves you to wonder; and I think that's exactly what Inception does.

You squint that eye, Leo! (Seriously though, he had an incredible performance)

Plot: Cobb 's Tragic Life

I dissected the movie by breaking it down into three plot lines. If you've seen the movie, I'll clarify: [1] Discovering the truth about Mrs. Cobb [2] The last job to take Cobb home [3] Fischer's "discovery" about his father. The second plot line I listed is the main plot line. Without giving too much detail, I felt that the side plots were much more interesting. DiCaprio slowly unveils the truth behind his troubles with Mal to us as the movie progresses. This turns out to be an intricate part of his past which (literally) shoves its way into his affairs. Aside from the amazing casting, directing, and special effects, this constant worrying about whether or not his past will invade his present makes this movie the epiphany of a thriller. I personally loved Fischer's aimless floating along. Cillian Murphy brings a realness to the character which draws you into his struggles. By the end of the movie, both times, I wanted to hug him. There was one scene in particular that tore me apart. When he finally reaches what he's been looking for.

Directing: Christopher Nolan Does It Again

The movie (the way it was directed, presented, advertised) almost took on an identity of its own. I think, even looking back several years from now, it will stand as tall as Gladiator when it first debuted. Even the smallest details are thoroughly thought out. Now, the pre-release hype was partially because of his last work, The Dark Knight, which I will assume you all have seen.

Reminiscent of The Dark Knight?

This behind-the-motorcycle motion scene does remind you The Dark Knight, doesn't it? I remember a street motion scene just like this in The Dark Knight. When I first saw it I was hoping that he hadn't reused a lot of his shots, which he didn't. Overall, the directing was hard to notice, which means it was impeccable. If you're wondering why you can't see half the character's face, you've got a bad director on your hands. Keep making movies Nolan, we need someone to combat Shyamalan's ego.

Special Effects: Gravity-Defying, Physics-Bending Wonders

One thing I particularly liked about this movie was that it didn't present the viewer with a movie and effects on the side. Everything was cohesive. There were no special effects just for the sake of having special effects, which is something I thoroughly disapprove of! [coughAvatarcough]

Gravity-defying, physics-bending Gordon-Levitt; we adore you.

If you don't remember this scene from the trailer [or movie, if you've seen it], shame on you! This is the one scene that drew me in the most. It flashed for about 3 seconds and I wasn't sure exactly what I had just seen but I knew I wanted more. This is a perfect example of what this film's special effects are all about. The plot line requires specific scenes like this so the effects don't look like they're...just "thrown in." Because he wanted to keep the actors immersed in everything, Nolan actually set up places for the large scale drama to occur. The avalanche later in the movie was induced for the sake of the film.

They supplement the movie to a strong degree but could never stand alone without the plot; the perfect position for the special effects portion of a film.

Casting: Nolan Knows His Favorites

Leonardo DiCaprio: Perhaps it wasn't best that this film released so shortly after Shutter Island, Scorsese's dramatic, thriller. There's a strong resemblance, not only between Leonardo and Leonardo, but between the actual characters. Cobb and Teddy could have a comfortably long, conversational lunch without ever having met before. However, if we set Shutter Island aside, DiCaprio was the perfect fit for Cobb's shoes.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: This role, for him, amplifies how versatile he is. I had seen him in Brick and was looking forward to watching 500 Days of Summer. This recent role will set him apart in the film industry. Assuming the character is a charming, knowledgeable nerd-dream, he fit the part perfectly. He also brings a degree of much-needed humor to the film.

Absolutely sultry or absolutely demonic.

Marion Cotillard: This actress was truly terrifying in her role. When she wasn't being absolutely sultry, she was being absolutely demonic. An overly well done performance. Reading up on her, I hadn't realized she was a foreign actress. This surprised me because she blended into this film so beautifully. Cotillard and DiCaprio fed off each others energy and didn't let you remember it was only a film.

Ellen Page: Let me begin by stating my bias: I love Ellen Page. I loved her in Hard Candy and I loved her in Juno. I haven't seen Whip It yet but I intend to. That being said, I'm not sure she was right for this role. Her acting was nothing short of spectacular (her screaming "WAKE ME UP!" didn't make you panic?) but I felt like her previous films occasionally crept into my brain. My issues aside, I think her performance rivaled DiCaprio's.

Cillian Murphy: I first saw him in Red Eye alongside Rachel McAdams. Then I saw him in Sunshine and Batman Begins. When I first watched Red Eye, I was hoping that I would see him again in a lot of movies. He was an actor that I thought had a lot of potential and I'm glad he's reached this level. Although out of his usual element, being a villain, Murphy presents the struggle of his character in a truly raw way. Of all the characters in this film, his emotional struggle was the one that most resonated with me.

Michael Caine: Although he had a small role, I think he fit his role perfectly, as usual. His characters can't vary too much unfortunately (he typically plays the old, wise, witty character) but I still enjoyed seeing him on screen. Nolan knows his favorite actors.

Music: A Riveting, Original Score

The original scores by Hans Zimmer (also did the music for Gladiator) were nothing short of spectacular. There really is a science to the way music draws you in or out of things. And I think the music he composed for this film did worked wonders drawing viewers in and warning them not to blink.

Yasmeen's Personal Favorites:

Arthur's gravity-defying hallway scenes. Fischer's final discovery scene. Cobb's experimenting with sedatives scene. Arthur. Arthur explaining paradoxes to Ariadne. Arthur's only kiss in the film. The general tension between Arthur and Eames. The idea of a totem. All of Mal's evil glares. Arthur's ingenuity. The ending of the film. Arthur, again.

[ Hong Kong ]

I haven't posted here in a while. I don't have any good excuses. Tsk tsk. I just haven't felt like it. I think a large part of it is not finding any outlets for my fashion creativity. I don't really have the resources to start creating anything meaningful yet and that's frustrating. And I hate posting if it's "just because". So recently, in my withering-away fashion life, I started exploring Ebay for steals. And I discovered the world of Hong Kong fashion. I feel like I should be living there, I hate going into American stores and seeing clothes for sex appeal. Leaves me empty handed and distraught. And, often times, I'll end up buying something just so I can "have something new"--that's never good. So! I'm pleased with this finding. I bought three things:

I won the tights and the blouse above. Too whorish to be worn together.

And I bought the jumper to the left, below and I'm looking for the skirt in the picture on the right.
The store was selling the cardigan but when I saw that skirt I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately, he said he doesn't have it but he'd ask his photographer.

Day At The Lake

I went row boating! Is it all one word? Either way, my boyfriend and I went row boating the other day. It was a nice change. I spend most of my days inside reading, drawing or watching movies. We went to the Mercer County Park (which, at first, seemed like the Bermuda Triangle). It was ridiculously hard to find. Like we actually used our GPS too and that took us to a dead end. It was almost creepy. But then we finally got there, after about an hour. The ride was $15 and we were pretty much the only people in the water with a row boat. Everyone else had a kayak or peddle boat. Made me feel awesome. Here are some photos.

I love this house. There's another next to it that's even more interesting but I couldn't get a shot of that while we were driving.

Rory Kurtz

Some of my recent inspiration is the work of Rory Kurtz. He is a self-taught pencil, ink and digital paint artist. I really admire the amount of detail and effort evident in his work. Some of the concepts are things I would never think of:

I really like the coat. Big, gold buttons...those might make their way into my work.

I love how primal this looks. Wide skull structures are prominent in cats; she kind of looks like a tiger to me. Also, anyone else see a little bit of Madonna in there?

I have no words for this. Just amazing.

Forever 21 and Heritage 1981 Purchase

Guys! I'm so excited about a recent purchase I made! I was so so so sad when a tank top I wanted disappeared as fast as it appeared at Heritage 1981. I got in large so I could sleep in it. It was this precious top:

Our environment really should be our number one priority. I feel like people don't have a sense of urgency when it comes to endangered species and the oil spill unless it affects them immediately and directly. The thing is...we're basically in a pot of water. It's not boiling quite suddenly but it is heating up to that level. We're not responding with our survival instincts because it's all happening so slowly. But, the fact of the matter is, it is happening and we can't just ignore it. Our Earth is dying slowly. It's going to take a lot of time to repair decades of damage but I believe its possible. I'm going to dedicate a post in the future to what individuals can do to be more responsible with respect to the environment. Now, then!

Back to the rest of the purchase, I love headbands and wearing them in that sweet bohemian way. So, I got the jeweled one above. I also got Heritage 1981 Distressed Boyfriend Jeans (above) in two colors; Dark Denim and Light Denims.

Overall, a successful shopping moment!

One small update! I watched Toy Story 3 last night. Wow. That's all I can say. Just go see it. What a memorable trilogy. I hope they continue with 4 and 5 and 6...I would watch Toy Story forever.

I think my next project will be a variety of Woodys...perhaps a montage. Which reminds me! I haven't published any of my art here. Want to see?

Some inspiration for me this morning:

I was feeling loopy so I decided to browse fashion blogs. I came across Kim of Eat.Sleep.Wear. and I love her bold jewelry. She complements very calm textures and muted colors with big, bold stones. It works perfectly.

Next is Diya of In Her Stilettos. Her style is really cute and quirky. I loved all over her outfits but these gold rings particularly interested me. I love connected jewelry. It gives the appearance of being disconnected ...and then create a physical bridge. It just seems like people are more aware of themselves when they wear bridges like that.

And finally, have you guys seen Ewen McGregor and Natalia Vodianova in Vogue? Peter Lingburgh captured an interesting series of scenes (the progression of 1950s marriage and divorce) in photos in US Vogue July. Check out the whole plot here.

Madison Marcus Spring 2010

I'm sitting around in bed exploring the internet...and I actually do that comfortably now! My apartment is really, really hot and it was just unbearable some days. Yesterday my boyfriend and I went to Target and I picked up the swellest tower fan. It doesn't really cool the whole room down but it's nice to have next to you when you're working. I can't wait to move out of this place...

On a more fashionable note! Here's some of the pieces I adore from Madison Marcus Spring 2010:

I love the button down in the first outfit. Not only is the color gorgeous (I usually don't like yellows) but the loose fitting design makes it so masculine. All she's missing is suspenders. I also like the color and design of the second outfit. The contrast of the textures really grabbed my attention. And, all I can say about this last one is: vertical stripes. They speak for themselves.

Skirt Render

I'm not huge on costume design but inspiration comes from all places! While I was watching So You Think You Can Dance? last night, I saw that Courtney Galiano was rocking a very dramatic and flowing skirt. I couldn't tell exactly, but it looked like a layered skirt with a nylon and polyester base. There was a lot of movement going on so it was difficult to see the details.

Courtney's outfits always have dark colors and lace which I love. It contrasts with her skin really well and I'm incredibly pale so it's no wonder I love them too! ...At any rate, you can see the skirt in the first picture above. This inspired me to draw up a similar flowing skirt. My first render is below:

This is my more bubble-shaped version. I want it to have a sheen, reflective texture so it sort of glows against the light. There is an inner layer of non-patterned lace, it's a bit longer than the base layer. On the back view, you can see a large lace bow. I imagine some thin wire would need to be in place to help it retain that shape. The two ends of the bow trail down flowing behind.

Take a look at this beautifully decorated sarong skirt by Dries Van Norten (above left). I was at a loss of words when I initially saw it. I just love the small yet strong dark red square embroideries.

Summary:
Both feature strong side designs. The colors in the Dries Van Noten sarong are intricate but a similar side decor look can be achieved with the F21 skirt. The F21 skirt includes a side flounce ruffle and creates a much sleeker and more modern look.

I fell in love with this slouched cuff style when I first saw it. It's almost like your shoes are wearing little skirts. It gives off that appearance without the annoying hassle of actually tripping over a long skirt or wide leg pants.

Summary:
Both feature 4 inch heels. The F21 boots, however, are made of faux fur. The Steve Madden's price comes from the leather and suede design as well as the wider, and probably more stable, heel.
